In the midst of my chaotic preparation to leave the country, my dear friend Lenett offers to throw me a going-away party... with a little over a week before I was scheduled to leave, I thought it would be impossible to squeeze it in, but after the date was confirmed, the Saturday before departure, I realized it was the perfect time.
I, along with my daughter and grandson, was greeted by Lenett and her daughter Jordin. After hugs and hellos, our conversation led to my upcoming overseas adventure. Lenett never skipped a beat all the while preparing the menu in front of her.
One by one, people began to arrive. I was greeted by everyone in her family (and extended family) with exception of her mother who lives in Northern California. Of course I couldn't stop talking about the opportunity in front of me and people were genuinely interested in hearing what I had to say.
The food was ready and it was the best Filipino food I have ever eaten! There was even cake and ice cream afterwards.
I know this sounds wrong, but I had allocated a block of time to spend knowing I had last-minute preparations at home and because I didn't want to turn a joyous occasion into a sad one. We talked a little more and took some pictures. I managed to hold back the tears during the good-bye hugs and well wishes, but broke down when I got in the car.
Spending time with Lenett and her family was great and I will remember that day always.
